VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – Less than 24 hours until the polls open and people in one Virginia Beach neighborhood are trying to figure out who took off with campaign signs.
It was caught on security camera Sunday night.
The theft happened in the Larkspur area of Virginia Beach, not too far from the intersection of South Independence and Edwin Drive.
10 On Your Side received surveillance footage from a homeowner whose sign was taken. In the video, someone walks up to the sign, pulls it out of the yard and then hops into a vehicle trailing closely behind
“Unfortunately I wasn’t that shocked, in the political environment today,” said Fred Herrmann.
Herrmann walked outside his home Monday morning and noticed his Elaine Luria campaign sign missing from his yard. He called a friend who visited his house the night before.
“I asked her if my sign was there and she said ‘oh yeah it was there. My sign was stolen as well,’” said Herrmann.
He soon realized he wasn’t alone.
“About four or five other people that I know, their signs were stolen,” said Herrmann.
Herrmann has posted campaign signs before but he said this is this first time any have ever been stolen. 10 On Your Side asked what he would say to the person who stole the signs.
“If you have a disagreement with me, that you talk to me. I mean that’s the big problem. We’ve divided ourselves into these big camps and these tribes of its us against them. It’s ridiculous because we’re all Americans,” he said.
Andrew Horton lives next door and shared the Luria sign with Herrmann.
“I’m not too surprised. Things are so crazy right now with how angry everybody is,” Horton said.
Although the signs are gone, residents said they’re confident the culprit will be disappointed come Election Day.
“Just wait until tomorrow. We’re coming for you,” Horton said.
Herrmann contacted Virginia Beach Police and filed a police report, The residents hope this type of theft doesn’t happen in future elections.
