NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – The Norfolk SPCA has to change things, because its washing machine broke down. The machine broke two weeks ago and it is causing issues for staff.
“It was pretty awful,” said Melissa Heard with the Norfolk SPCA. “We tried to fix it, but it is going to be as much to fix it as it would cost for a new one.”
The industrial size washing machine is also on its last leg, barely running these days. It’s left bags of towels and blankets piling up.
“This here is our pile of laundry from the last 24 hours,” Heard added.
The blankets and towels are used as bedding for the 26 dogs and 62 cats. It is a little touch of home as they wait to be adopted out.
“They are really important to keeping the animals happy while they are at the shelter,” said Norfolk SPCA’s Kimberly Sherlaw.
The SPCA relies solely on donations so there isn’t money to just run out and buy new washers.
“We are looking at putting most of our funds back into the care of the animals, the food and the staff that’s required to care for the animals,” Sherlaw said.
Unlike playing with kittens and puppies, laundry isn’t fun, but when it’s something we all have to do.
“If everything is in really good working order it is a great day,” Heard added. “That means we can focus on the animals and focus on getting those animals to the right family.”
