NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — We are in the midst of what’s known as “engagement season,” and brides and grooms “to be” are busy planning their weddings.
This weekend a local bridal showcase in Norfolk will not only be helping hundreds of couples start their new lives, they’ll be helping breast cancer survivors start theirs.
The Uniquely Yours Bridal Showcase at Norfolk Scope is “all about women,” event producer Pearl Taylor told WAVY.com.
That means brides-to-be and breast cancer survivors like, Lisa Chacon. She began began volunteering for Susan G Komen Tidewater 13 years ago and was diagnosed with breast cancer herself three months later.
“You never know why you’re in a place at the right time, but it really was, and to have the support that was here and the people who understood what I was going through it made a huge difference.”
The experimental treatment that helped save Lisa was funded by Komen through fundraising done across the country at community events like the bridal showcase.
“Over the years we’ve given a little over $40,000 to Komen,” Taylor said.
Survivors take to the runway as part of the fashion show.
“When the survivors come we have special music and a fight flag they’re carrying and every year people stand up and clap and holler,” Taylor said.
It’s personal for her too. “My two best friends are breast cancer survivors, so every year for my 11 years I have dedicated the show to my two women.”
Women celebrating life and all its new beginnings.
A portion of the proceeds from each ticket go to the local Komen affiliate.
Tickets for Sunday’s event are $10 each and available at the door, or on the Uniquely Yours Bridal Showcase website.
