Body recovered near Town Point Park identified as Air Force staff sergeant

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The body of a man pulled from the Elizabeth River last week has been identified as a member of the United States Air Force.

Staff Sergeant Jose Antonio Ramirez was assigned to the 27th Special Operations Contracting Squadron at Cannon Air Force Base in New Mexico, according to a news release from the 27th Special Operations Wing Public Affairs. He was found dead on July 14 in the water near Waterside Drive.

A spokesperson with the U.S. Air Force said Ramirez was on temporary duty away from his home station at the time.

The Norfolk Police Department is investigating his death.
