JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — Family members confirmed the body found Wednesday on the shores of the York River was that of missing South Carolina boater David Polson.
The 64-year-old’s body was recovered directly across the river from Croaker Landing by Virginia Marine Police around 4:50 p.m.
David’s niece, Sandy Church, told 10 On Your Side that David and his older brother, Robert Polson, were on an annual fishing trip when the accident happened.
“My dad thinks my uncle had a heart attack because he fell back in the boat and it caused the boat to capsize,” Church said.
Robert had a life jacket on, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. He was rescued by nearby boaters and taken to the hospital, according to the Virginia Marine Police. He is expected to be okay.
David was not wearing a life jacket.
Multiple agencies were searching the river after a 14′ aluminum boat carrying the two men overturned Tuesday around 2 p.m. near Croaker Landing. The Virginia Marine Police and Coast Guard spent the overnight hours looking for David, hoping to find him before possible severe weather moved in Wednesday.
“My dad just wants us to thank everybody that searched,” Church said. “We know it took a lot of man hours. But we have closure. I mean everybody has been so nice. That’s the way David was. David would give you the shirt off his back. And now Virginia has given us him and we can go home.”
Marine police were able to pull in the capsized jon boat to the Croaker Landing ramp around 5:30 p.m.
The 14-foot aluminum boat, nicknamed “The Tub,” is from Dillon, South Carolina.
The Coast Guard, Navy, Virginia Marine Resources Commission, James City County Police, Virginia Dept. of Game and Inland Fisheries, Port of Virginia Regional Command, Hampton Police Marine Patrol, City of Poquoson Fire and Rescue and the Gloucester Fire Department all helped with the search.
