Boat owners claim damage from Navy’s Harborfest demonstration

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Several boat owners say their boats were damaged when a wake slammed them into each other during a Navy demonstration around 4 p.m. Friday at Harborfest.

WAVY contacted four boat owners who were anchored, and in some cases tied together, near Hospital Point in Portsmouth. The area is directly across the Elizabeth River from Waterside.

They say a large wake that occurred during a demonstration by the Coastal Riverine Force caused their boats to rock wildly. An owner from the Clarksville area, who keeps his boat in Hampton Roads, says he had damage to his hull and stanchions and now has holes in his boat.

The Virginia Marine Resources Commission confirms it is investigating the incident.

John Scott’s sailboat Summer Wine had some scratches on its hull. It was tied together or “rafted” with another boat. He’s concerned about possible damage to the rigging.

Scott says he plans to file a claim with the Navy through his insurance company. The Navy says it has no comment and cannot investigate until a claim is filed.
