Blog: Local impacts likely from Hurricane Florence

11AM Update

Florence has reached hurricane status again. It’s expected to continue to strengthen over the coming days as it moves into an environment more conducive for it’s development. Florence is expected to become a Major Hurricane, and it could remain that strong as it approaches the Carolinas by the End of this upcoming week.

The Tidewater is at risk for direct major impacts from this system…including very strong wind, heavy rain which could lead to inland flooding, coastal flooding from storm surge & tidal flooding, and beach erosion…among other impacts including tornadoes.

The earliest estimate of Tropical Storm force winds could arrive at the NC coast by Wednesday night…but a likely chance for experiencing T.S force winds (80-90% chance) by Thursday evening. There will be a 40-50% chance of experiencing T.S.force winds in Hampton Roads by late Thursday.  Stay tuned to each newscast as we continue to monitor Florence and specify the impacts as it gets closer.
