Block party event at Newport News Piggly Wiggly draws community, city leaders

NEWPORT NEWS, Va (WAVY) — In a block party-style cookout, Newport News leaders gathered to build awareness, engagement and community pride among residents.

Community members interacted with the Newport News police, sheriff and fire departments. They call it the Piggly Wiggly Safety Partnership Night.

From 5-7 p.m., the free event was an effort to encourage more community engagement. This was also an opportunity to talk more about the importance of building, respecting and protecting the community.

“We are all one family and the issues that happen in Newport News affect all of us,” said Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew. “So whether it is public safety, city government, our businesses, our faith leaders, our churches, and most importantly our citizens of Newport News working together regardless of the issue, we can always make it better.”

Free food and refreshments were available for community members.
