YORK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — A bicyclist was killed Thursday evening after being struck by a hit-and-run driver on Lakeside Drive in York County.
According to Virginia State Police, the accident happened around 7 p.m. The victim was transported to Riverside Regional Hospital, where he later succumbed to injuries.
Troopers are trying to track down the suspect vehicle, described as a late 90’s gray Ford Excursion with front damage to the marker lights and lower portion of the grill.
The bicyclist has been identified as 50-year-old Brian Leonard Utne of Yorktown.
10 On Your Side spoke some of Utne’s friends. “Why wouldn’t you stop,” asked friend Sean Gilmartin.
Utne was big member of the local cycling community. “I’m sure a lot of my cyclist friends would want to string him up and drag him down the road,” Glimartin said.
“He loved to ride,” friend Patrick Johnston said. “He pretty much did it daily.”
Utne was hit and killed approximately three miles away from his home. “They treated him like a deer,” Gilmartin said. “Most people stop for a deer. Why wouldn’t you stop for a human being with a wife and a couple kids?”
“Disgusting,” added Johnston. “It’s disgusting. Not the American way.”
State Police are still asking the public’s assistance in locating the suspect vehicle. Contact State Police at (757) 424-6800 or at firstname.lastname@example.org.
