VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – The Fatal Accident Crash Team is investigating an accident involving a vehicle that hit and killed a bicyclist Saturday morning.

Police were dispatched to the 300 block of Pacific Avenue and 16th Street just after 10 a.m.

EMS took the bicyclist to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. He has been identified as 35-year-old Gabriel Borja Santos of Virginia Beach.

The preliminary investigation revealed Santos was riding his bike eastbound to cross over Pacific Avenue and 16th Street.

A person driving a Kia Sorento was in the southbound lane when it stuck Santos in the intersection. According to police, the victim did not have the right of the way and was riding in the crosswalk.

The driver of the vehicle remained on scene. There are no charges pending.

Ashley Withrow is a sales associate at Half Moon Music right next to where the accident happened.

“I was just steps away from someone get killed, it’s just really hard,” said Withrow. “It was my first day.”

Tara Nevans is the manager who was training Ashley.

“I was hoping it was a drill and they were testing some emergency services.”

Nevans said she quickly learned it wasn’t a drill when police came in and asked for any video.  Little did they know, their store surveillance system caught the whole thing.

“That’s only when we realized something had happened and it wasn’t a drill,” said Nevans. “It’s really sad that someone lost their life.”
