NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The Virginia Zoo in Norfolk says it has lost its beloved kangaroo, Marley.
Marley, an Eastern grey kangaroo, arrived at the zoo from the Kangaroo Conservation Center in Georgia nine years ago, and lived in the zoo’s Australia Walkabout.
Zoo officials say Marley, at 14 years-old, lived beyond the general life expectancy of a kangaroo — which is eight to 12 years in the wild. Staff started treating Marley for a dental disease over the past year.
Officials say they switched Marley to a softer diet, but he was still have trouble eating.
Marley was humanely euthanized due to the advanced progression of the disease and his overall quality of life, officials say.
According to the zoo, Marley was a favorite among staff, volunteers and visitors.
