CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — An assistant principal in Norfolk is being remembered as “a consummate professional” after a deadly crash Sunday on Taylor Road.
Ladawn Durant, 44, was in her fourth school year as an assistant principal at Norview Middle School. Her husband, Michael, says she was passionate about the job and her family.
“She was amazing, fun, funny, very intelligent, caring and passionate about children,” said Durant.
Police say Mrs. Durant was the passenger in a vehicle that was struck just before 10:45 p.m. Sunday on Taylor Road at Taylor Court. She died a short time later at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Police say Durant was riding in a Chrysler 300 when the driver attempted to turn left onto Taylor Court. During the maneuver, a vehicle heading west on Taylor Road struck the passenger side.
“Visiting [Norview Middle] this afternoon, this was probably the toughest day I’ve had as an educator,” said Walter Brower, principal at Norview High School.
Brower hired Durant to be assistant principal at the middle school.
“You could tell she had a genuine love for kids,” he said, in a phone interview Monday. “I just had that feeling she was going to be the perfect fit for the team at Norview Middle school.”
Brower says she was “firm but fair” and respected by the roughly 1,000 students at the school.
“She made everyone laugh … She made sure you passed and made sure you did what you had to do,” said Jasmyn Roberson. “At the end of the day, we were all her babies still.”
Police say the crash is still under investigation.
Norfolk Public Schools released the following statement about Durant’s passing:
