WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (WAVY) – Fire investigators say an exhaust fan caused a fire that displaced a dozen people and four animals Friday morning.

Firefighters with the City of Williamsburg Fire Department, York County Fire and Life Safety Department, and James City County Fire Department all responded to the fire in the 400 block of Merrimac Trail just after 5 a.m.

Crews located the fire coming from a bathroom ceiling in one of the apartments. They were able to quickly contain the fire to that room, but three other apartments received smoke damage.

The apartment complex is assisting the displaced families.

There were no injuries reported.
