Arrest made in hit-and-run of Newport News man with autism

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A suspected hit-and-run driver has been arrested weeks after a Newport News man with autism was struck on his way to the grocery store. 

42-year-old Michael Wormley, of the 100 block of Riverlands Drive in Newport News, was arrested Sunday and charged with failure to report accident with death/injuries/or damages. 

The victim, 27-year-old Allen Cooke, said he was hit near the Newmarket Plaza while he was walking to Food Lion.

Wormley allegedly got out of his vehicle to check on Cooke, asking if he was OK, and left the scene when Cooke starting limping the quarter mile back to his mother’s home. Cooke ended up being taken to the hospital with multiple broken bones in his foot, according to his mother.
