YORKTOWN, Va. (WAVY) — Several Hampton Roads Ben & Jerry’s locations are offering free ice cream cones on Tuesday as part of the chain’s 40th annual Free Cone Day.
The free cones will be handed out from 12-8 p.m. at three area locations, including one in Yorktown that’s accepting donations toward medical care for low income and uninsured residents.
The Yorktown location at 332 Water St. is in its 12th year of partnering with the Lackey Free Clinic. 100 percent of the donations gathered at Tuesday’s Free Cone (Clinic) Day will go toward the clinic.
Daniel Hayden with the Yorktown store says for every dollar raised, the clinic is able to provide approximately $13 in clinical care and medications for local residents in need. Hayden says his location has donated just under $500,000 for the Lackey clinic in the past 12 years.
The Vermont-based ice cream chain, which started in an abandoned gas station in 1978, started the tradition as a way of thanking customers.
