KITTY HAWK, N.C. (WAVY) — A sizable alligator spotted in a canal Monday morning in Kitty Hawk has been caught.

Kitty Hawk police said in a Facebook post there were reports of an alligator between Pineway Drive and Ivy Lane, on the sound side.

Police cautioned residents to keep an eye on children and pets when they’re in the yard.

Monday afternoon, police posted an update saying the alligator had been caught, tagged for research and released.

Members of Coastal NC Alligator Research said they were at the Duck Donuts when they heard about the gator on the radio and went to check it out. Researcher Steve Dinkelacker said they released it at the site of capture. They measured it at 9.5 feet.

According to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, alligator growth rates are slow in North Carolina. It usually takes more than 16 years to reach six feet.
