All clear given after gas line ruptured at ODU football stadium site

News

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The all-clear has been given after a gas line at the construction site for ODU’s football stadium was ruptured Tuesday morning.

Norfolk Fire-Rescue officials said in a tweet crews working at the site hit an unmarked two-inch gas line. Representatives from Virginia Natural Gas responded to the scene, the tweet said.

The leak caused 49th Street to be blocked off between Hampton Boulevard and Powhatan Avenue. The parking garage next to the stadium as well as stadium offices were evacuated.

University officials said in an update people who parked in the 49th Street stadium garage can now get to their vehicles.

Construction crews are in the middle of a project to build the new S.B. Ballard Stadium at ODU. The $67.5 million stadium will seat 21,895 and is set to open Aug. 31.
