Ahead of Florence, surfers ride waves on the Chesapeake in Ocean View

News

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Although Hampton Roads is not in Hurricane Florence’s direct path, our area is still going to feel some effects.

In the Ocean View area of Norfolk on Thursday a small crowd gathered to fish, surf, and just watch the waves Florence was already churning.

One resident, Tommy Davis, has lived in Norfolk his entire life and came to the Ocean View Pier to check out the storm.

Davis said the scene was rougher than he expected.

“It’s strong you know, at the house we couldn’t really comprehend how much it was doing until we got down here but the wind, the sand, it feels like it’s glass cutting you when it hits,” he explained.

Many people like Davis were soaking in the scene, but a few surfers spent hours riding the waves.

City officials say 22 people and two dogs have checked into the Norfolk shelters as of Thursday evening.

The next high tide is scheduled to hit around 1 a.m.
