Absentee voting underway in Va. for June primaries

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) – Tuesday was Election Day for 59 Virginia localities. While not every area held an election, all of the Commonwealth will have a primary next month.
The congressional midterm and Senate primaries are scheduled for June 12, but absentee voting is already taking place. It started last Friday.
Qualified Virginia voters can vote absentee in-person at their local voter registration office or vote absentee by mail.
There are 20 ways to qualify to vote absentee in Virginia. The reasons include pregnancy, a religious obligation or a disability or illness.
Christopher Rashad Green is an organizer with New Virginia Majority. He said many people don’t even know they fall into one of the qualified categories.
That’s why he’s spending the weeks leading up to the primary talking with people about their status. Right now, he’s checking in with older Virginians.
“My focus has been to address the senior populations throughout the city, senior facilities and senior housing targeting absentee balloting,” said Green. “Because I know how it can be challenging for a lot of our seniors to get out and get balloting.”
He said it’s important for all citizens to make an effort to vote if they can — even during primaries, which sometimes see low turnout.
“Your ballot is like political currency,” said Green. “So everybody should take advantage of that currency and express their voice with their vote.”
The last day to register to vote or update an existing registration ahead of the June primary is May 21.
The deadline to request an absentee ballot to be mailed to you is Tuesday, June 5. The request must be received by your Registrar by 5 p.m.
The deadline to request an absentee ballot by appearing in-person is 5 p.m. Saturday, June 9.
Virginia law requires voters to present an acceptable photo ID when voting in-person. To see a list of what will work,
