CAPE HATTERAS, N.C. (WAVY) — This Memorial Day weekend marked Dot Barker’s 91st time celebrating the holiday! She celebrated a little differently this year.
Barker, who turns 92 in July, made the trek up 257 stairs… for the 6th time. The stairs are housed by the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and she remembers details from its original location in 1922!
Barker says she won’t forget the balcony view from the lighthouses original home.
The lighthouse moved again in 1999 — 2,900 feet away from where it previously stood — to protect it from the threat of a changing shoreline. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the move.
