8-year-old raising money to help the homeless in Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — An 8-year-old girl in Hampton is making it her mission this summer to help feed the homeless.

“When I was two, I was taking a ride with my mom and I was looking outside and I saw a homeless person sitting on the sidewalk, and I asked her ‘why is that woman sitting there?’ and she said ‘because she is homeless’ and I said ‘well I have french fries, can I give them to her?’ So she rolled down the window for me and let me give her my french fries from Mcdonald’s,” said Zion, as she reflected on what inspired at a young age to help out people in need.

This summer she is selling “icees” of all flavors, from strawberry to grape, to raise money to feed the homeless.

Her mother, Jamilia Earls, tells 10 On Your Side she could not be more proud.

“We cannot go past anybody standing on the street, whether they are homeless or not, without Zion asking’ mommy, are they homeless?’,” said Earls. “They could be waiting for the bus and she thinks they are homeless. If they’ve been sitting there for too long, she’s like I want to help them. So she is awesome.”

Zion wants to leave a positive impact on her community. “They don’t have money like us, they don’t have food like us, so I just like to go around and look for homeless people and give them some food and some money to make sure they are alright,” she said.

To help Zion raise money for the homeless, you can donate to her GoFundMe page.
