78-year-old man dies after crash in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A 78-year-old man has died after crashing into a ditch and being transported to a local hospital six days ago, according to police. 

Newport News Police say the crash happened around 3:50 p.m. in the 12700 block of McManus Boulevard on March 15. 

The man was driving a Buick Century when he reportedly attempted to avoid a vehicle stopped in the roadway, according to police. 

When the man was taken to a local hospital for treatment, the officer on the scene was advised that his injuries were not life-threatening. Police say he succumbed to those injuries five days later.

The man has been identified as Waverly Daughtery of Yorktown. 

Police say there was no indication of intoxication or reckless driving from the accident. The Newport News Police Department Crash Team Unit will complete the investigation.
