NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Newport News police have arrested six people they say are connected to a string of auto repair burglaries and stolen cars.
“I figured it had to be more than one person,” said Jason Heang who works at D&I Auto Services on Warwick Boulevard.
Heang had his suspicions. He wondered who broke into the business he has called home for a decade.
“They broke the glass.,” Heang added. “I guess they walked around over here, because this is where we store our keys. They just ransacked it.”
Someone stole about 30 keys off the hooks at D&I. They then stole four cars parked outside.
“It’s a bit heartbreaking having to repair the building and everything,” Heang said.
Police say it happened six times since January. Dung Pham arrived Sunday morning to find the glass window shattered at CND Auto.
“They didn’t steal anything like my tools or my computer,” Pham added. “They only took the keys you know.”
They took keys, along with a car.
Monday morning, police got the break they needed. They were called Blue Point Terrace, because someone was tampering with a car.
When they got there officers say they found 20-year-old Dominic Heflin and 19-year-old Ethan Evans, along four teenagers inside a stolen Mercedes taken from D&I. There were two backpacks in the trunk filled with more than 70 keys.
“I’m glad (they got them),” Heang said. “Hopefully everybody gets their keys back and their cars back.”
Police now working to find all the cars.
Officers say the juveniles range in age from 15-17. They will officially be charged Wednesday.
Overall, the six suspects are facing more than 100 charges, according to police.
