SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Four people were displaced late Tuesday night after a fire caused a brief evacuation at a Suffolk apartment building.
Suffolk officials said firefighters were called to the Meridian Obici Apartments around 11:30 p.m.
The fire started on the outside patio of a second floor apartment, and had extended into the inside walls as well as the apartment below.
Officials said the entire 12-unit building — which had 32 people inside — was evacuated as a precaution. Four people in the apartments impacted were displaced.
Firefighters got the fire out just before midnight. Around this time, other units were responding to a house fire around 20 miles away in the northern part of the city that displaced a family of five.
Officials said the fire marshal determined the fire at Meridian Obici Apartments was caused by carelessly discarded smoking materials. No one was injured.
