3 adults, 9 dogs and tortoise displaced by Newport News fire

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Newport News fire crews responded to a house fire in the 600 block of Sterling Street Tuesday morning.

The fire was reported around 7:45 a.m. Once on scene, firefighters had it under control within 20 minutes.

Investigators have determined the fire started in the kitchen because of unattended cooking, and smoke then spread throughout the home.

Three adults, nine dogs and a tortoise are displaced and are receiving assistance from the Red Cross.

There were no injuries reported.
