NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Two people face drug and gun charges after a traffic stop in Newport News on Sunday, police say.

Newport News police said officers in the area of 16th Street and Ivy Avenue spotted a driver run a red light — before turning turning right, taking off at a high rate of speed and following a vehicle in front of them too closely.

Police said the driver swerved to the right, almost hitting a parked car.

Officers stopped the driver in the 1500 block of Wickham Avenue, where police said they detected a smell of marijuana coming from the car.

A search of the car led to the discovery of an extended clip underneath the front passenger seat, a firearm underneath the driver’s seat, a loaded magazine near the middle console area and suspected cocaine.

The driver, 29-year-old Latoya Carter of Hampton, was charged with possession with intent to distribute Schedule I or II Drugs, manufacturer/distribute drugs on certain properties, concealed weapon, possession of firearm with Schedule I or II drug, revoked license, reckless driving, following too closely and a traffic signal violation.

The passenger, 30-year-old Marcus Moody of Hampton, was charged with manufacturer/distribute drugs on certain properties, possession of firearm by felon, possession of firearm with Schedule I or II drug and possession of ammunition by convicted felon.
