2 cats die in Chesapeake apartment fire; resident displaced

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A woman is displaced from her home after a kitchen fire damaged her Greenbrier West apartment on Saturday, leaving her two cats dead. 

According to the Chesapeake Fire Department, firefighters were called to the 900 block of Rue Marseille around 7:20 p.m. for the fire. 

When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found smoke and flames coming from the first floor apartment. The fire department says they brought it under control within 20 minutes. 

The resident was able to escape safely. One firefighter was treated on the scene for minor injuries, according to the fire department. 

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
