14-year-old wanted for attempted carjacking in Suffolk

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A 77-year-old man was injured during an attempted carjacking at a Suffolk gas station and police believe the person who tried to steal his car was only 14 years old.

The incident happened around 6:30 p.m. this past Saturday, at the Raceway in the 1200 block of Portsmouth Boulevard.

According to Suffolk Police, the victim had just finished pumping gas and was getting into his vehicle when two people approached and tried to carjack him. The victim fought back and sustained minor injuries.

Police investigated and identified a 14-year-old from Suffolk as a potential suspect. The juvenile is not in custody. Petitions are on file for charges of conspiracy to commit carjacking, carjacking, and grand theft auto for a non-related incident.

The investigation continues and more charges may be filed.

** NOTE: On Monday, Suffolk Police released that the 14-year-old had been arrested, but issued a correction Tuesday that the teen was not in custody.
