NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A 10-year-old boy remains in serious condition after being shot in the head at a birthday party Wednesday night.
Police say a 42-year-old man shot in the leg in the same incident.
Officers responded to the Auburn Pointe Apartments on Crescent Way just after 8 p.m. and found the injured boy.
“It could have been any of our kids. Unfortunately, it was him,” said Jose Soto, who lives in the unit below the 10-year-old’s family.
Soto says there were about 25 kids playing outside. He says the young victim was tossing around a football with friends. Other neighbors say the boy tried running away from the gunfire.
“All the parents are coming outside looking for their kids. His mom comes out and is hollering his name up the block. He’s the only one not answering. It was so sad,” Soto recalled.
Police say the young boy was not the intended target.
“Time and time again I’m behind the camera stressing about the gun violence,” said Newport News Police spokesman Brandon Maynard. “It’s got to stop. 10 years old, at a birthday party, senseless crime. It’s awful. It’s got to stop, and it’s got to stop now.”
Neighbors says the 10-year-old is well-known around the complex because he often walks kids home from the bus stop.
“He’s a role model to little kids out here,” Sotot said. “He does everything. He is a Boy Scout…He does a lot to stay out of trouble.”
Police say the 42-year-old man was driven to the hospital in a private car that crashed on the way. The driver continued driving to the hospital and returned to the crash scene, according to Maynard. He’s since been released.
Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspect(s).
