PERQUIMANS COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) — One person was killed and two people are still hospitalized after a head-on crash Thursday afternoon in Perquimans County.

The crash happened just before 3 p.m., about two miles from Hertford on Center Hill Highway, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

A blue Saab hit a gray Dodge Caravan carrying three people. Troopers say the front seat passenger of the Dodge was airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, but he was later pronounced dead. He was not wearing a seatbelt and had to be cut from the van.

The driver of the Dodge was awake from surgery after fracturing multiple parts of her lower body.

The driver of the Saab was still in surgery as of 5:50 p.m., but was expected to live, troopers say.

A back seat passenger in the Dodge received treatment for multiple facial fractures but was released.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but drugs or alcohol are not expected to have played a part.
