Health Makeover Week: Ornish Diet

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) -- As much as we often hate to admit it, what we eat has everything to do with our overall health and well being.

Physician and researcher, Dr. Dean Ornish developed a diet program credited with preventing, treating and even reversing the progression of serious medical conditions like type 2 diabetes, early stage prostate cancer and most notably, cardiovascular disease.  

The program's guidelines include only ten percent of calories coming from fat and animal fat is not on the menu. This is a vegetarian, whole foods way of eating. Plant protein takes the place of meat in the Ornish Diet.

Dr. Panigrahi is a Cardiologist and the Medical Director for the Sentara Ornish Lifestyle Medicine Program. He highly recommends this way of eating for his patients battling cardiovascular disease and has seen it actually reverse as a result of the diet.
