Creature Feature: Pot-Bellied Pigs

Most of us think of only dogs and cats when we go to local animal shelters, but critters like bunnies, guinea pigs, parakeets and pigs are often in need of adoption too.

The Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center has two pot-bellied pigs looking for forever homes. Norman, who is nine weeks old, and Wilbur, who is 14 months old. Jessica Wilde, the Shelter Operations Supervisor, recommends potential adopters do their homework before considering a pig.

City and/or County requirements vary around Hampton Roads, so it is important to make sure a pig is allowed. Proper shelter is necessary, dietary and behavioral education is vital and understanding they get big. One hundred pounds is average for a full grown pot-belly.
