Virginia June 22 COVID-19 update: 144 new cases, 7 new deaths reported; 1.5% of tests coming back positive on average

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia reported 144 new coronavirus cases and 7 new COVID-19 deaths on Tuesday.

It comes a day after the commonwealth celebrated reaching President Biden’s milestone of at least 70% of adults with at least one vaccine dose. More than 60% of adults are also fully vaccinated.

  • New cases: (+144, 678,909 total), 137 per day on average
  • New deaths: (+7, 11,361 total), 6 per day on average
  • Current hospitalizations: (-22 patients, 263 currently)
  • Percent of positive tests: (1.5% on average)
  • Vaccine doses administered: total doses administered: 8,865,628 percent of population with at least 1 dose: 57.9% (70% of adults), percent of the population fully vaccinated: 49.5% (60.5% of adults 18-plus)

  • Gloucester: 2,270 cases, 66 hospitalized, 49 deaths (no change)
  • Hampton: 10,708 cases, 433 hospitalized, 181 deaths (+2 cases)
  • Isle of Wight: 3,172 cases, 151 hospitalized, 70 deaths (no change)
  • James City County: 4,665 cases, 168 hospitalized, 72 deaths (-1 case)
  • Mathews: 602 cases, 23 hospitalized, 12 deaths (no changes)
  • Newport News: 14,320 cases, 505 hospitalized, 238 deaths (+8 cases, +3 hospitalized)
  • Norfolk: 18,005 cases, 1,034 hospitalized, 269 deaths (+2 cases)
