PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A local K-9 Officer was spotted shell-ping a unique resident on Saturday.

Portsmouth K-9 Officer Monteith came upon a large turtle as it was trying to make it’s way across the westbound lane of Route 164, according to the Portsmouth Police Department.

Due to the amount of traffic on the roadway, Monteith decided to stop and pick up the terrapin.

He then transported his new friend, which he named ‘Fred,’ to a lake in a nearby community.

Fred was issued a warning and released without incident.
