CHESAPEAKE, Va (WAVY) – Saturday afternoon, people stopped by a handful of different locations throughout Hampton Roads to give the gift of life during the holidays.

WAVY TV 10 and FOX 43 partnered with the American Red Cross for the “Every Drop Counts Blood Drive”.

The American Red Cross said its this time of year, during the holidays, that they see a shortage in donations.

“Not a lot of people come donate because they’re vacationing it only takes about 30 minutes and you can save up to three lives with one donation and you never know when you’re in need of blood,” said Kristina Jenison with the Red Cross.

“My father in law and i give blood every time we can but every 66 days we get an email and well sign up together to give blood,” added Jonathan Cotton

Cotton said this is his 28th time giving blood.

While this blood drive ended today, the American Red Cross said you can still donate any time, and if you need a new years resolution, consider adding donating to your list.

If you’d like to donate simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information.

All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.

Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also must meet certain height and weight requirements.
