NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Hampton Roads Pride is celebrating the 30th year of PrideFest!
They held a special event during the PrideFest celebration week, Pride 30, highlighting the history of PrideFest and local LGBT history. Following the forum, guests ventured out to Carousel Park for the Pride on the Peninsula festivities.
The first PrideFest was held in Norfolk at Northside Park on July 15, 1989. It featured a potluck-style picnic and games like volleyball and dodge ball.
In 2011, the festival was moved to Town Point Park to meet the increase in attendance. Today, it’s not just a one-day festival, but a whole week of special events highlighting different parts of the community.
“PrideFest and the week of all the events is a lot of work. But it means being able to stand up and stand out, being able to be yourself, you know who you are,” said Hampton Roads Pride President Fawn Faulks. “You know we’re all born of the spirit, so we’re all the same. And the celebration is embracing one another in that spirit.”
