I’ve recently talked about how warm this month has been so far. Yesterday we hit the low 90s over most of the area as expected.
There was a lot of heat and humidity for this time of year. The average high is in the mid 70s. While we are going to get a brief break over the next couple of days, the long term forecast looks like the heat will continue for a while. So far the month of May is running 6.7 degrees above average. We may end up with the warmest month of May on Record at the rate we are going.
The average temperature so far is 71.8 degrees according to the National Weather Service (Wakefield). The warmest May on record was actually last year (73.6 degrees). 2nd place is the year of 1880 (73.56 degrees). May of that year was interesting meteorologically because we had 13 days above 90 degrees. That was the same year that Thomas Edison patented the incandescent electric lamp. It was the year that the building of the Panama Canal began. The US census measured a population of about 50 million people. My how times have changed.
While it has been hot locally at times, there has also been some very cold air in the northern and western U.S. There was recently snow over parts of Colorado and Minnesota.
In-between there was a lot of severe weather across the central U.S. The Storm Prediction Center had numerous reports of tornadoes thorugh Tornado Alley yesterday. Our region today we’ll be much cooler and very stable. A cool front was dropping south this morning.
Temps actually started in the 60s and 70s, but we won’t warm up too much today. Highs will only be in the upper 70s. That will be a big cool down compared to yesterday. Winds are picking up out of the north. Some of the gusts will be up to 20mph between the midday and the afternoon.
We’ll have lots of sunshine as high pressure sinks southeast. Dew points are dropping into the 50s, and they will probably drop to the upper 40s by later today. We’ll have cooler weather tonight as low temps drop to the 50s. There might be a couple of upper 40s inland. It will be good sleeping weather. Then tomorrow we’ll have more mild weather with highs back in the 70s.
We’ll be mostly sunny. Temps will warm to the 80s from Thursday into the weekend. It’s looking less likely for a back door front to really kick in this weekend. So high temps will be in the 80s on Saturday. We’ll be in the upper 80s to around 90 Sunday into Monday. So far the Memorial Day Weekend is looking good, but some isolated showers may pop up. I’ll have more on that tomorrow.
