Intern Blog: Writing the Rungs

Checking out the rundown

It’s official! I have decided to pursue a career as a producer. I have given it much thought and I do believe that I have what it takes. I am focused on perfecting my writing as much as I can.

Writing has become a substantial portion of my internship.I never saw writing in my future mainly because I was so focused on video production. I do write for my school’s paper and after learning the similarities with broadcast writing, I strongly believe that I can do both.

I have moved from practice topicals, teases, and stories to content that actually air. There wasn’t a lot of time between those instances but I truly value the process.

Upon chatting with Anita Blanton, working with Kristen Joyal and shadowing two producers, I was sure what I wanted to do. I frequently shadow Kathryn Havrilla and Meagan Williams. They allow me to write stories and teases on my own and then they go over each one with me, giving me tips on how to make it better. Before I knew it, my stories and teases started airing. It was a great feeling. The next thing I knew, I was producing a whole block of the 10 p.m. show! My words were on TV! That motivated me to keep going…keep writing.

I continued working with Kristen Joyal in promotions and this experience had a huge impact on my decision to be a producer. My task for the two days I shadowed her was to write the 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. topicals. I started each day attending the  morning news meeting. My objective was to gather information on all the top stories of the day in order to generate accurate and exceptional teases. After researching the stories, I got to decide which stories were more effective topicals considering the target audience.

Upon approval of the script, I watched and learned from Mike Booth as he edited the topical. At the end of the day, I realized that I would enjoy being a topical producer.

That afternoon, Kristen informed me of the opportunity of a lifetime. She told me that if I was interested, I could write the night-side topicals a few days during the week. I gladly said yes, I have learned to take advantage of every opportunity that comes my way.

I’m happy and anxious to start next week! I’m actively building my portfolio as I complete this internship.

I am climbing a ladder to a future in producing and to prepare, I’m writing the rungs.
