“Pause. Take a breath. You’ve made it.” These are the words I spoke when I realized that I gained the internship at WAVY-TV 10. I could not believe that I was selected for this amazing experience, after dreaming about this opportunity for what seemed like forever.
I recall my first day at WAVY as exhilarating, yet nerve-racking. I walked into the newsroom eager to learn and gain many nuggets of information. There I was with my notepad, writing down every detail Mike Akin informed me. My first day involved me shadowing the news assignment desk. I learned about the various signals that connect reporters with the station while they are out on the field, along with the system that news topics are entered. I must admit, I was a bit overwhelmed with the amount of information I consumed, such as learning about the troll, live packs, TVU’s, and the budget.
I was amazed at the pace of everyone working in the newsroom. Everyone is in their zone, working diligently to get the job done.
I learned several lessons while at WAVY, pertaining to news and life; I need to move forward in my internship with boldness and courageousness. I will not be afraid to ask the wrong questions, or not ask any at all. I will be confident in myself as an intern because I am here for a reason.
In the upcoming weeks, I look forward to going out on the field with reporters, shadowing producers, editing, and possibly experiencing life in front of the cameras.
I am forever grateful for this opportunity, and I am thrilled to gain experience and enhance my resume.
I am a firm believer that good things come to those who wait, and now I can proudly say, “The wait is over!”
