Intern Blog: Planning Out the Road Ahead

At just over the halfway point of my internship at WAVY, I have gotten to have all sorts of cool experiences, and learn from lots of different media professionals. The game plan now is to have my internship project in the works. With a couple examples of my work complete, the focus is to get to planning out new pieces in both writing and video to put together in a portfolio.

First off I have helped with the collection of information for the story on Mike Jones’s crash at South Boston Speedway. With my connections in my hometown, I was able to get in contact with his father, Dean Jones, and collect video of the crash from the track videographer, Ricky Newbill. Second, I prepared the script, and gathered information for Zack Greinke of the Arizona Diamondbacks’ record setting day. Having thrown seven shutout innings, stolen a base, getting two RBIs, scoring a run, and having net two hits was impressive indeed. Even more impressive was that it was the second time he’s performed the feat this season (not including the seven shutout innings) making him the second pitcher in MLB history to do so in a single season.

So what is next on my plate? Right now I’ve got two big plans. First I want to do a lead up to Evolution 2018. Evolution 2018 is the biggest fighting game tournament of the year, and as a huge e-sports event, I see this as a great chance to flex some of my knowledge, and hopefully introduce some people to the excitement of fighting game tournaments. Second, I plan on working on  package for the Hampton Heat. Being the second race in the Virginia Late Model Triple Crown, which follows up a race at my hometown track of South Boston Speedway, I see this as a great opportunity to go out and put my skills to the test. Being able to cover my hometown drivers, as well as working with local talent, has got me all sorts of hype for this event.

Now for a possible third idea I’ve been playing around with in my head. A big star from my hometown has made the MLB National League All-Star team. Jeremy Jeffress of the Milwaukee Brewers will be in the bullpin this Tuesday, July 17, for the All-Star Game. I’m hoping to see him take the mound, and make the baseball fans back home proud.

I can’t wait to see this portfolio come together.
