Intern Blog: My WAVY-TV Experience

After years of wondering what career path I would take, WAVY-TV has given me an answer in just a few months…

This internship has exceeded all my expectations. I have grown in more ways than I could have imagined. Being a Hampton Roads Show intern I knew I would be learning everything there is to know about lifestyle TV but this internship took me much further. I got to learn from every department and I even learned a few things about myself.

In the beginning, I was overwhelmed by the fast paced and unexpected nature of The Hampton Roads Show. There was a lot to do in a short amount of time before the show and things could change last minute. So I was surprised when I grew to love that aspect of it all. Similarly, I struggled with writing for news but the more I practiced, I started to enjoy it. Through both of these experiences I felt myself becoming more confident in my work and in myself. With this new found confidence, I was looking forward to work everyday. I finally knew for sure that this industry was for me so I was excited to learn as much as I possibly could.

Part of the reason I looked forward to work everyday was the people. I have never been in a work or teaching environment where everyone is so friendly and willing to help. There was a smiling face in every hallway and someone ready to answer my thousands of questions in every room. Even at the busiest times, WAVY team members would stop what they’re doing to help me or let me practice. Whether it be producing, directing, editing, etc. they let me try it all.

The internship has reassured me that my dream of being a producer is possible and now I have a reel to share with potential employers. It may have been just a few short months but this is an experience I will never forget. I have learned things I can carry with me throughout my career and beyond.
