During my time at WAVY-TV 10 & FOX43, I have gained valuable skills and knowledge that I can use when I enter the workforce. The station has gone out of their way to provide me with the best experience, from learning the roles of each member in the department to stepping into the role of an Account Executive. During the last few weeks in the sales department, I have been calling prospective new businesses that vary from the medical industry, home repair, athletic apparel, and many more. The most valuable advice I have learned from cold calling is to never get discouraged by the unsuccessful phone calls and cherish the great ones.
To set yourself apart from other sales representatives, you must create a Valid Business Reason. This is a brief statement that compliments their businesses uniqueness and positions the message to be about them and not about what WAVY-TV can offer. This is essential to get past the gatekeeper and onto speaking with the decision maker. I successfully set up multiple meetings with some of the prospects, discussed with them their goals and if our station can help them achieve those goals. Unfortunately, I cannot complete the process of solidifying new business for the station due to the summer coming to an end, however the Account Executives will continue working with my prospects and hopefully create a partnership that will last a lifetime. Being in a sales role comes with its challenges. They are constantly working to create new business and trying to meet their budget goals while also looking for fresh new ways to penetrate an industry for potential TV or digital advertising. It can be a stressful job at times but the satisfaction and joy of helping businesses within the community grow and prosper is why they all love their jobs.
After spending time with this team, I can confidently say that I would like to become a sales representative when I enter the workforce. I am sad my internship is over but I am extremely grateful for the time I was able to spend at WAVY-TV 10 & FOX43.
