Intern Blog: A Final Thank You

on the scene

As I walk through the doors at WAVY, I cannot help but feel bittersweet on my last day. I am sad that my internship is over, but so incredibly happy that I have had this opportunity. Over the past twelve weeks, I have not only learned so much, but I have grown as a future reporter and as a person.

Each day, I learned more about how a news station works, and how all the different departments work together to make not only a newscast, but a great TV station. Working in the promotions department, I learned the importance of branding and promoting the talent at the station and partners of the station. My lessons on branding shined through producing the 4pm and 7pm topicals. I also got to work on my reporting skills and on-camera presence by shadowing On The Scene Reporter, Symone Davis. I could not have asked for more of a better, well-rounded learning experience. I got to work on skills that I hope to utilize in my future career, like writing, editing, shooting, and reporting.

I want to give HUGE shout outs to everyone in the promotions department for making me feel so welcomed from day one. I truly felt apart of the team everyday. Each and everyone of them taught me lessons that I am glad to be walking away with. I want to specifically thank Symone for helping me grow as a reporter, and giving me a lot of career and life advice on our drives to and from shoots. I also want to specifically thank Mike Booth and Kristen Joyal. They encouraged me while teaching me how to produce topicals. They both also supported me throughout my time here and constantly made sure I was getting the experience that I wanted. Also, Stephanie Cooke for placing me in the promotions department. I did not know this was the department for me at the time when applying for internships, so thank you for introducing me to a new career path.

Twelve weeks ago I didn’t know what the function of a promotions department was, or if I would learn from being apart of the promotions department at WAVY. Today, on my last day being apart of this team, I feel blessed that I was given this opportunity to learn more about my interests and future career choices. A true thanks to WAVY and all the lessons if brought me. Maybe we our paths will cross again someday in the future!
