I always knew I wanted to be in journalism. When I was little, I would chase my family around the house with a “microphone” aka a wooden spoon for interviews. Fast-forward ten years to my Junior year in college. I’m sitting in my TV News and Production class when my teacher, Stephanie Cooke is talking about internship possibilities at her station. Needless to say, I applied that night. I jumped up and down when I saw that I had made it to the second round of the internship process. The next week I got a phone call for the phone interview. I was gripping the phone so hard my knuckles turned white…I was so nervous.
A week after that, I got another call from Stephanie to say that I got it! She said that she decided to put me in the social media department and I’m so happy she did. My first day, I was so nervous so I went into the safe haven of the bathroom to catch my breathe. There, I saw two dancers in full gowns getting ready for The Hampton Roads Show. And, they were just as nervous as I was. We ended up having a great show.
My first expectations of this internship were so off because I thought that people would be un-inviting – and I could not have been more wrong. Everyone here has been so welcoming. It’s week three of the internship and I’m finally getting the hang of it. I can’t wait to see what else is in store!
