VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — This wasn't how Virginia Beach planned to celebrate its golden anniversary.
First, officials found that a time capsule buried into City Hall's concrete when it was erected wasn't waterproof, so all the documents inside had turned to mush. The Virginian-Pilot reports (http://bit.ly/1guHOqp ) workers discovered the problem Thursday while getting ready for the big unveiling during the city's 50th anniversary celebration on Saturday.
Then on Friday, the city canceled its party amid concerns about a rainy and windy forecast. Several events including a parade, art show, musical performances and fireworks were scheduled at the resort city.
City officials say the celebration will not be rescheduled. The city does, however, plan to put together another time capsule to be opened on its 100th anniversary.
