SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Suffolk emergency crews responded to a fatal vehicle crash involving a tractor trailer on Holland Road Friday evening.
Tim Kelley with the City of Suffolk said Suffolk dispatchers were notified of the crash around 5:50 p.m. from witnesses who said an SUV and tractor trailer collided. Suffolk police and fire-rescue workers responded to the crash scene in the westbound lanes of Holland Road (Route 58) where it intersects Longstreet Lane.
Diana Klink with Suffolk Police said a preliminary investigation revealed a Honda Element SUV was speeding and weaving in and out of traffic before it collided with the back of the tractor trailer. The male driver of the SUV, later identified as 28-year-old John Thomas Knox, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Klink said the tractor trailer's driver was not injured.
The westbound lanes of Holland Road remained closed for hours while the crash was investigated and the scene cleared.
Initially, police alternated traffic in both directions in the eastbound lanes, then a detour was set up for westbound traffic via Buckhorn Drive. However, Klink said another tractor trailer ran off Buckhorn drive into a ditch, causing a secondary accident and rerouting traffic back to Holland Road.
No one was injured in the secondary crash. Police again began to alternate traffic in both directions in the eastbound lanes of Holland Road around 9:30 p.m., and were still doing so a little after midnight Saturday morning, according to Klink.
