HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - A 52-year-old man is facing a murder charge after a verbal altercation escalated in Hampton, according to police.
Sgt. Jason Price with the Hampton Police Division said officers were dispatched to a home in the 100 block of Winchester Drive around 9:20 p.m. for a report of a fight. When they arrived, they found Andrew Navell Deloatch, 45, of Hampton unresponsive.
Deloatch was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead from suspected asphyxiation at 10:16 p.m.
The suspect was immediately detained at the scene. Darryl Allen of Hampton was later charged with murder.
Price said the preliminary investigation revealed Deloatch and Allen were involved in a verbal altercation that escalated into a physical fight in the backyard of the home.
Cpl. Mary Shackleford with the Hampton Police Division told WAVY News' Lauren Compton five people live in the home which is privately owned and utilizes services by the Community Services Board. Shackleford also said Deloatch and Allen were roommates.
Residents told 10 On Your Side they were not surprised to hear about what happened. Residents said there have been several fights at the home in the last few weeks.
