NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Newport News Police have arrested an 18-year-old man after a store clerk helped thwart a would-be robber’s plans.
On Sept. 29, officers responded to the Speedy Mart located at 19th Street and Jefferson Avenue in reference to an attempted robbery, Harold Eley with the Newport News Police said. There, they learned from a victim that he and his brother were working and were in the process of closing when two masked suspects entered.
A handgun was brandished and the suspects demanded cash. But the clerk wasn’t about to go down without a fight.
Surveillance cameras were recording as the clerk grabbed for the gun, holding onto the suspect’s arm. He was able to take the gun from the suspect, who fled. No money was taken.
A round was fired during the struggle but no one was injured.
Marcus Knox, 18, of Newport News was arrested and charged with attempted robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery. Officers were looking for 18-year-old Lonell James Thomas Boddie of Newport News.
Boddie was described as a black male standing 5’9” and weighing 156 pounds. He was wanted for attempted robbery, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and conspiracy to commit robbery.
Boddie was arrested Sunday in Hampton after a Crime Line tip, Lou Thurston with the Newport News Police Department told WAVY.com.
