HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - The waters off Buckroe Beach have re-opened after testing positive for high levels of bacteria Wednesday.
New water samples were collected Thursday, and the city says the water now meets state standards.
"Due to the extensive rainfall, there is a great deal of runoff with a lot of bacteria. In addition, this storm caused a lot of turbulence, which stirred up the waters and increased the bacteria floating in the water," said John Schellenberg, environmental health manager for the Hampton Health Department.
Buckroe FIshing Pier remains closed due to storm damage. It is scheduled to reopen Friday in time for Labor Day weekend fishing.
