HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) - Interstate 64 eastbound at the HRBT was reduced to one laneWednesday, due to an accident involving a U.S. Postal truck.
A spokesperson for the Virginia Department of Transportation(VDOT) said the truck was entering the eastbound side of the tunnelat around 4 a.m., when it hit a protective device -- called a crashcushion -- at the end of a work zone. The crash apparently damagedthe fuel tank and caused it to spill some fuel along the highway. Acrash cushion, according to VDOT, is supposed to stop a vehiclefrom entering a work zone.
The accident created a major morning rush hour traffic backupfor hours.
One of the westbound lanes at the Downtown tunnel was alsoclosed Wednesday morning, due to some overnight repair/maintenancework.
